"These sitters had been tongueless, earless, eyeless conveniences all day long."
The people on the porch had been bored and silent all day. They did not think to start conversation until Janie come back. No one had authority over them to tell them what to do. They felt confident and nothing could tell them right or wrong.
"Seeing the woman as she made them remember the envy they had stored up from other times. They made burning statements with questions, and killing tools out of laughs."
As Janie walked by people remember the kind of lady she use to be when she was around them. So they laughed and made jeer statements toward her about the way she came back looking. They all talked about her because they had no one to stop them from doing so. They did not have a mayor to lead or keep them under control, so they all had continued with their comments and laughter.
