Pg. 137 “Janie learned what it felt like to be jealous. A little chunky girl took to picking a play out of Tea Cake in the field and in the quarters.”
Tea Cake would play around with a girl named Nunkie. They played almost every day together while they were working. That made Janie become a little suspicious about the both of them. Janie was a little jealous because she knew what Nunkie was up to. She had never been jealous, but now she knows what it feels like.
Pg. 138 “She good for nothing exceptin tuh set up in uh corner by de kitchen stove and break wood over her head. You’se something tuh make uh man forgit yuh git ole and forgit tuh die.”
Tea Cake explains to Janie that she is the only women for him. Also she makes him forget about dying and just live your life. Tea Cake tells Janie he would never choose Nunkie over her. Nunkie could never take her place because she is not half the women Janie is.
