During the Emancipation Proclamation there was plenty of hope that I might have a chance to be free.No one wanted to go to Union and participate in war. So they told slave owners they would free the slaves. Once I got free I went up to the Northern State. Up there may have been free, there still were laws and many differences between blacks and whites. I could not sit on the same side of the church, bus, or boat as the white. Not even my children or wife were allowed. We were still treated as if were slaves.
When the abolitionist came around; they rescued me and I'm sure a lot of other people. They really did me justice. They help us feel like if we were just important as white people were. Made me me feel comfortable for who I am.
